Scoops (Conceptual Project)
01 | Project Type: Personal Project
Most of the work I’ve produced over the years has been fairly conservative in nature. Therefore, I decided to venture out to create a side project that allowed me to create something more whimsical and fun.
02 | Objective:
The objective of this project was twofold: 1.) to create a brand identity (including creating unique custom icons for a website) for a conceptual company to push my design skills in a direction I hadn’t explored yet, and 2.) build (locally on my computer) a responsive landing page for mobile, tablet, laptop and desktop screens.
The Company
Scoops (a conceptual company) is an ice cream shop that produces small batch premium all natural ice cream. They pride themselves on creating pure and balanced ice cream that doesn’t include any artificial colors, artificial flavors or high fructose syrup.
03 | Description of Process:
Research
I first spent some time researching how
other ice cream companies were marketing themselves online. It was interesting to learn how companies focused their attention on different customers. Some spent a great deal of time sharing their stories and beginnings while others directed their attention strictly on their products. I decided that I wanted to create a site that felt more personal and authentic. Therefore, I chose to create a back story on the company’s beginnings and why they chose to create all-natural premium ice cream.
Brand Identity
Once Scoop’s mission was established, the focus was then to develop a brand that visually correlated with their mission and target consumer. While creating Scoops’ logo (and overall identity), the following important factors were taken into consideration: their local customer base, family-friendly establishment, fun light tone, and philosophy to create simple natural ice cream.
Responsive Website
Before I began working on the landing page, I created icons for links and social media icons for the site. Next, I made a
wireframe for the landing page. Once the wireframe was complete, I created a detailed prototype of the site for all devices (mobile, tablet, laptop, and desktop). I realized that the prototype posed a few user experience issues (such as navigation, links and text size) which I revised 4-5 times before settling on a final layout. Once the prototype was finalized, I used the text editor Brackets to create and write HTML and CSS locally on my computer.
Periodically, I tested the landing page in different browsers for compatibility and used Chrome’s DevTools to adjust the screen sizes to verify the site was working properly on each device type. I had a few issues with adjusting the media queries and changing the CSS to different screen sizes but eventually sorted them out.
04 | Outcome:
I absolutely loved working on this project. It was fun from beginning to end. I found that I really enjoyed designing the company’s brand identity. While I ran into a few issues with screen size adjustments, I was happy with the outcome of the landing page.
